The basic premise is fairly simple - select a scale (the size of the area in question), a time interval (how often you'll be rolling for events) and the frequency of events (the chance an event happens. Any time an event occurs along the timeline, select an appropriate table, and roll D66 to find out the event that occured. From these events, the referee can tie them together into a narrative history of the location. While designed for compatibility with the Cepheus Engine and 2d6 OGL rule sets, it can be used with any science fiction setting.
After some research, I did find a few tidbits that I think will get us in the right direction. Summing up various information that I stumbled on, the most definitive thing I found sums things up thusly - "The largest 'terrestrial' planet is generally considered the one before you get an atmosphere gets too thick, which happens at about 5-10 Earth masses (something like 2x Earth radii)."

It's not much, but it's a start. We know the bottom end is going to be a size 8 planet (1 Earth radii, 1 Earth mass, 1g gravity) from the chart in the last post. The top end was also assumed to be size G, with twice the radius of Earth. I'm assuming that the largest super Earth uses the upper bound for statement above, about 10 Earth masses. For everything in between, we'll just assume an even distribution of Earth masses. That will just leave us with gravity, and that can be calculated fairly easily. A little bit of rounding, and viola', a size table for super Earths. It's probably not scientifically accurate, but I think it will be playable.
For ENIGMATIC, I've already decided on the area of space covering a sector sized area around Earth. So, I know where the stars are, and since we're working with actual data, those details can be looked up rather than generated for the most part.

One of the things that I wanted to incorporate from the beginning was some detail about known exoplanets, which I'm discovering is a daunting task - more are discovered every day, and more effort is being made to detect them. Currently, we've found on the order of 2,100 planets in 1342 system, including 509 multiple planet systems. That's a lot of data, and it's growing all the time. Happily, I can cull it down to data for 110 stars close enough to show on the map.

9 14,400 km - 1.125 Earth
A 16,000 km - 1.25 Earth
B 17,600 km - 1.375 Earth
C 19,200 km - 1.5 Earth
D 20,800 km - 1.625 Earth
E 22,400 km - 1.75 Earth
F 24,000 km - 1.875 Earth
G 25,600 km - 2x Earth
H Neptune size - 2x to 6x Earth
J Jupiter size - >6x Earth

Digging into the information we have, the most commonly known data is the mass of the planet and quite often the orbit it occupies. That's enough to get started, if a couple of assumptions are made. Since Cepheus Engine doesn't track density, we can assume that radius and mass scale linearly for my purposes. That assumption is probably wrong, but we'll start with that. Looking at a lot of the exoplanet data, many are up to 2x the size of the Earth. The problem is, the planet size table in CE only goes up to size A, or 16,000 km. Since the UWP can handle expansion, we end up with something like thisH and J will essentially cover small and large gas giants (something lacking from the UWP anyway). Obviously, H and J won't be used for main worlds, but since I plan on having UWPs for all of the planets in a system, it's worth having a tag for it.

I was toying with a much shorter table, essentially 3 entries - one for generic Super-Earths, one for Neptune sized, and one for Jupiter sized. A quick Google search suggested humans could live on a world with as much as 3-g gravity, but it would be definitely unpleasant, and probably wouldn't happen. But, having access to a more definitive set of ratings gives referees the option to send their unsuspecting players down onto a 3-g world to retrieve the mcguffin, and that fits in with the grittier, more dangerous feel I'm going for with ENIGMATIC.

So, I've got the radius figured out, and Richard Hazelwood on the CE Facebook page mentioned that density does NOT scale linearly with size, so mass and gravity won't either. Since the CE size table includes gravity, I'll have to do some research into how density does scale, and figure out the respective gravity for each entry. Look for part 2 of this post in the near future. See you soon!
It was a tough year for DSL Ironworks on a number of fronts. By far, the thing that caused the most upset was the release of Traveller 2.0 (which dragged on about 5 months too long) and the formation of the Travellers Aid Society on Drivethrurpg.com. As you've probably heard, Mongoose did away with the Traveller Logo License and the Foreven Free License, which was what all of the products produced by the Ironworks were under. All new Traveller material, whether for the OTU or standalone settings, is to be released ONLY under the Travellers Aid Society, with a increase in the royalties paid to Mongoose and Drivethrurpg. This, along with the changes to the licensing regarding IP, made me take a hard look at what I was doing and how to proceed.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

In July, Jason "Flynn" Kemp released the Cepheus Engine, a 2d6 OGL retro-clone of classic Traveller. After having a look, I liked what I saw, and decided it was time for a change. With a new rule set, and the OTU looking less palatable, a new setting seemed to be in order. By building the setting from the ground up, and basing it in a true OGL ruleset, I decided we had found a way forward. But, what kind of setting?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

My true love in sci-fi has always been near future, gritty, and between 3.5 and 4.2 on the Mohs Scale of Sci-fi hardness. That is, relatively hard science, with a few caveats here and there for flavor. Movies and shows that I feel fit into this include Alien and Aliens, Blade Runner, Soldier, The Expanse series, Space: Above and Beyond, Outland, Pitch Black, and Space: 1999. So that is where I decided to head. The basics are covered in the proposal document, and cover most of what I'm aiming for.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Since late September/early October, I've been putting the pieces in place to get the setting up and running under the title ENIGMATIC. Using the Near Space map from Stellagama Publishing as a base (because it's OGL, incorporates a sector of space surrounding the Earth, and why reinvent the wheel), I put together a database for the 110 or so worlds closest to Earth. In order to help put together a timeline with interesting events, I assembled well over a hundred different events, ranging from natural disasters and civil wars to industrial disasters and missing space ships. I've also put together a way to keep track of groups and foundations, etc There's a ton of information already generated for the setting, and I'm starting to pull it all together into a coherent setting.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

This blog is going to follow the development of the ENIGMATIC setting as it grows. I'm aiming for a weekly post on Saturday nights (since I now have Friday and Saturday off from the day job), with other posts during the week as needed. I've also updated my Patreon page, so if you'd like to support me and get some additional goodies, that is an option for you as well. 2017 is going to be a great year, and I hope you'll join me for the ride!
One of my online friends and fellow publishers Jonathan M. Thompson, owner of Battlefield Press) lost his girlfriend Tammy a few days ago to an unexpected heart attack. Not only is this a devastating blow, but it is also an extremely expensive one.

The RPG publishing community at large has rallied together to help out a friend, and contributed $400.00 worth of gaming material to a special charity bundle for $30.00.

In memory of Tammy Mansfield BUNDLE

There is something here for just about everyone - Traveller, Call of Cthulhu, Savage Worlds, Pathfinder, and a ton more. All of the royalties from this bundle will go to Jonathon to help offset her final expenses and help a fellow gamer in his hour of need.
Fifty quality products for less than the cost of a dinner out, and you get to do something good for someone who really needs it.

Thanks to all of you for supporting our hobby, our industry, and our friends.

If you're not a gamer, or would prefer to contribute directly, you can do so through the GoFundMe page for Tammy.
I'd like to offer the contributing publishers a special hat tip as well; this bundle will give a chance to get acquainted with some of us you haven't tried yet.

Stygian Fox Publishing, Savage Mojo, Rite Publishing, Rogue Genius Games, Miskatonic River Press, DSL Ironworks, Arc Dream Publishing, Obatron Productions and Evil Beagle Games!

Thanks especially to all of you; none of this would be possible without your support.
I was digging through my files for almost ready items, and the 1000 ton Starstrider class jump carrier is one of those. I finished the model a looong time ago, but never finished it in time for inclusion in the Foreven ship books. I decided it was time to finish this bad boy off. So, I'm finishing the B&W rendering stuff today, and working on the write up and formatting. I had hoped to have this finished in November, but new arrivals in the family and the holidays kind of tweaked that idea. This should be out soon, and then we're going to take a look at another unfinished big boy, the 1000 ton Tentedal-class Patrol Carrier (an older Zho model used by the Avalar Consulate). That may take a bit longer, as it still needs deckplans (although the model is 90% finished) and the BW texture treatment. There may also be a couple more Zho fighter and utility craft variants to go along with it.

Damzinir (2834 Foreven): A new colonization effort has begun on this small world in the Halverdi Cluster, spearheaded by the Damzinir-Telliz Colonial Service Corporation based on Iderati (0732 Spinward Marches). At 0745 hours, the colonial transport Kaagira Constant landed with the first load of colonists recruited from the Spinward Marches. Without ceremony, the initial 75 colonists debarked and began construction of temporary shelters, apparently eager to get underway with their new lives. Additional work crews, mostly mining specialists employed by Damzinir-Telliz, began carving out more permanent homes in the side of a cliff beside the landing site. According to Damzinir-Telliz, the initial colony effort is targeted at 500 individuals to set up basic infrastructure and support facilities. Once that phase is complete, up to 3000 additional colonists will be added to expand those facilities and establish a series of mining operations for a variety of minerals. Initial surveys showed promising traces rhenium, palladium, and iridium. Damzinir is somewhat of a latecomer to the colonization efforts in the Halverdi Cluster due to it's environment. The average surface temperature is -54 degrees C, the air pressure is a mere 1/3 of standard, and the surface is exposed to high levels of UV radiation due to the thin atmosphere. Despite the harsh conditions, the directors of Damzinir-Telliz Colonial spoke very confidently about the success of the colony. "Is it a difficult environment? Definitely. But we've recruited some of the best available personnel, we have top notch equipment, and a common goal. Since each colonist has a stake in the effort, we expect this endeavor to be profitable for all involved."DSL Ironworkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04510776810074670352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4142387839114473074.post-16962945861069709092014-10-21T21:59:00.001-07:002014-10-21T21:59:34.097-07:00

TNS Foreven News (Historical Archive) 225-0930
Iazplrabr (0720 Foreven) continues to suffer under the effects of the disease known locally as dranzhtlas (the sun death). The colony here, established by the Zhodani corporation ladria Vlovl to support shipping to Obledliej (0422 Foreven), first reported this disease five months ago. Dranzhtlas manifests as photodermatitis, making victims extremely sensitive to UV radiation, with chills, fever, nausea, and rapid darkening of exposed skin. Prolonged exposure can lead to death. The causes of this disease are unknown, but thought to possibly be a reaction with something in the atmosphere. ladria Vlovl representatives assure the public that a team of experts have been called in, and are expected to arrive within the next month.
As I add more to the Bastards of Foreven, I'll be posting more Traveller News Service snippets as I go. They'll either be current news (roughly 1105 Imperial) or historical notes from before that period. These will be cross posted to my Patreon activity feed and my DSL Ironworks facebook page. Created modules will be posted to the Patreon activity feed as soon as they are completed, and will be released as products down the road a bit.DSL Ironworkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04510776810074670352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4142387839114473074.post-54891779487387434832014-10-18T22:56:00.001-07:002014-10-18T22:56:35.969-07:00Just finished up the Chatl-class (pics, deckplans, stats, and writeup) and posted it to my Patreon account. Greetings, friends, Travellers, and gamers!

I want to take a moment to let you know I have set up an account on Patreon, where you can support me as I detail the Bastards of Foreven setting and get yourself some great gaming material and other rewards in the process. For those of you who might not know about Patreon, it's a new way to crowd-fund content creators, sort of like Kickstarter with a couple of twists. Rather than fund one specific project for a defined period, Patreon allows you to support your favorite artists over the long term. It's simple to use, customizable to your budget, and allows you to get material on an ongoing basis. Here's how it works.

1. Head over to my Patreon page here: http://www.patreon.com/dslironworks. Check out my goals and the various reward tiers. If one catches your eye, then ...

2. Click on "Become a Patron". Create an account with the information requested.

3. If you'd like a sample of what kind of content I'll be releasing, click on the "Activity" tab above the Bastards of Foreven logo. There will be a couple of articles posted there. The first is a "TNS Foreven" update, detailing an event similar to the old Traveller News Service for the Foreven Sector. The other is a sample of the content I'll be releasing (typically 3-5 per month), in this case the Vendian Sky class yacht.

As a patron, when I finish a module (which can include a subsector, planet, ship, vehicle, location, organization, NPC, alien, animal, or adventure), it will be posted in the Patreon feed for you to download immediately - no waiting for me to release another product! In addition, TNS updates and flavor text will be released in the activity feed, even if you're not a patron. You can get in on this for $1.00 per month, for 3-5 releases. Higher support levels add rewards - chat sessions on Google Hangout, copies of the finished PDF release when it's done, discounts on printed products, and even copies of the 3d meshes I use to create the Bastards of Foreven!

Thank you so much for supporting me in this endeavor! I can't wait to start showing you around! Coming soon for my patrons - the Zhodani Chatl-class Leader Scout ship, the PDF map of the Foreven sector (24"x36", with interactive layers), similar 8.5"x11" maps and details for each of the 16 subsectors, and more.

Thanks again!

...And sometimes, you manage to get dug in, get a good flow going, and actually make some progress. Still lots of little detail work to do, but definitely coming along quicker than I thought. I'm also going to sit down and play with some different materials and rendering styles to see if I can shake out something new. More to come!

I've been doing ship models for quite a while now, and have generally steered away from the 'classic' ships, mostly because I have designs of my own I want to get done. Decided last night I would take a crack at a Beowulf, and it seems to be coming along nicely. I'm also still tinkering with the Tiaflfiet model, but I haven't had a chance to sit down and just dig on it yet. Lot's of other irons in the fire (one of which will be coming up very shortly). So this is, for the moment, my "15 minutes to doodle' model while between other things. More WIP shots to come.
Rough block workup of one idea. Anybody recognize it? Yes, I'm just blocking it out with the deckplans to see how screwed up they are. And yes, there are issues aplenty - the picture and the deckplans barely agree at all, so some liberties are going to have to be taken. Especially with the boat dock under the neck.

New WIP - Vendian Sky-class Yacht (200 dtons, J-2, M-2). Still needs a bit of work, stats finished, still needs deckplans and touch-up on the texture. The ring of circular panels are covers for the ships escape pods.

This started off as a ship I had built up stats for quite a while ago, started laying it out in Max, and couldn't get it to gel into something I liked. Yesterday, I had a bit of inspiration, and started tinkering. This is the result after a few hours. It was really nice to find a groove and be able to run with it.

Fleet Book 2 is in the pipe for finishing. Hopefully in the next week or two, if things go well. That will have all of the larger ships in it.

I'm also putting together an introduction video with some ideas to possibly set up a profile on Patreon. If you're not familiar with Patreon, it's a new take on the concept of crowd-funding pioneered by Kickstarter. There are two primary differences. Patreon users can establish an ongoing income, rather than the feast-or-famine model of Kickstarter, and subscribers get access to ongoing content, rather than the start-to-finish style of a Kickstarter. Patreon can also be set up with varying reward levels, much like a kickstarter, allowing you to choose your budget and level of rewards. There are a couple of different ways that it can be set up - either a flat monthly subscription, or price per piece rate.

So, just as an example of the subscription model, let's say I produce one ship every month at a minimum, with all the bells and whistles - stats, deckplans, black and white line-art, full color renders, and interior renders. For the sake of argument, let's say we have several subscription levels (these numbers are all totally arbitrary, and pulled out of thin air for the sake of the example).

Bare Bones (2.00 per month) - At this level, you get access to the basic stats for the ship and the basic deckplan.

Basic (5.00 per month) - At this level, you get the basic stats, basic deckplan, and black and white line art renders of the ship.

Intermediate (10.00 per month) - At this level, you get basic stats, deckplans, the line art renders, and full color renders.

Advanced (15.00 per month) - At this level, you get the stats, deckplans, line art, color renders, and black and white renders of the interior.

Expert (25.00 per month) - At this level, you get stats, deckplans, line art, multiple color renders, multiple color interior renders, etc.

Professional (50.00 per month) - At this level, you get everything from the Expert level, plus a copy of the 3d model in the format of your choice with a license for free personal usage in your own renders.

The beauty of doing it this way is that you, the end user, can choose what you want out in the way of final product. For me, as a creator, I start off knowing what my supporters are looking for and supports me to do things I might not normally do - most of my ships don't have any interior work at this point, simply because of time constraints. If everyone is pledged at the Basic level, I don't need to worry about color renders or interiors, which are both fairly time consuming.

The other way it can be done is per piece of content released. Let's say I'm putting out how-to videos and tutorials. Supports can pledge a given amount per release (and Patreon let's you put a cap on how much you're willing to spend each month). Let's say over the course of the month, I put out 4 videos, a couple of tutorial PDFs, and as a freebie to my supporters, the finished deck plan that was covered in videos and PDF. You're pledged at $1.00 per release (again, numbers out of thin air). The videos and tutorials would be $1.00 each, and the finished deckplan would be at no cost to you - total for the month =$6.00.

The advantage to the second method is that it encourages me to be productive and keep new content flowing.

The current idea includes a ship of the month (with varying levels of output as above - stats, line art, deckplans, full color renderings, and possibly releasing the 3d model for personal use as well). Another concept I'm playing with includes how-to videos on how I design ships and deckplans, basically tips and tricks for 3d beginners.

If you haven't come across DM Scotty and his 2.5 system for building terrain for fantasy games, I'll point you to The DM's Craft on Youtube, his Facebook page, and The DM's Craft Forums. Many of his techniques are easily adaptable to a Traveller/sci-fi theme. I've also been following the Starship Modeler on Facebook as well as the Starship Modeler Forums. I've been thinking of trying to combine the two concepts into what I do with Traveller starships - pieces that are both functional for play as well as display quality without breaking the bank. This would explore the how-to process with a wide range of techniques, from simple cardboard to resin/fiberglass to 3d printing.

Here's an example of DM Scottys 2.5D method, a model of my 20 ton launch I'm sure you've probably seen. This is scaled for 28 mm minis, and was made with stuff laying around my house (card board, foam board, black spray paint, and an empty pill bottle. As much detail as you want can be added to this, and I'd like to explore techniques for resin casting things like acceleration couches, lockers, etc. for use in play (or as a static display/diorama). At some point, I'd like to have it built up into a true 3d representation of the launch with a removable top hull, some type of lighting, and whatever else strikes my fancy.

Similar projects have been undertaken before (this Sulieman-class scout was a good start as is this variant scout); I'd like to find a blend of the two- something sutiable for display as a model, but come game time, something you can drop in the middle of the table, open the top, and dive right in. I'm no expert, by any means, but I'd be more than happy to take all of you along as I work through the techniques, tools, and methods to do something like that on your own.

Anyway, thanks for listening to be babble. As I said, I hope to have a video put together by Sunday that will go into more detail about everything. Thanks again for your support and taking the time to check out my work.

After a rather rough stretch, I thought I'd offer a brief explanation of my disappearance roughly ten months ago. In early August, I started with all of the preliminary work of finding a new job. My previous employer was busily shipping all of the jobs in my department to the Philippines, including sending several of my co-workers over to train our replacements. The writing was on the wall. I could have stayed and gotten a transfer to another department (as many in my department did), but I was generally sick of the management and pay. I lucked out and found a similar job with another company, netting myself a bit of an increase in pay and better benefits all around. I was slated to begin training there Oct 7th of last year.

On the night of Oct 4th, I had a stroke late in the evening, one that left me unable to communicate. I was alert, knew what was going on, walked to the car, otherwise perfectly normal. My wife, bless her heart, figured it out in about 30 seconds, and had me to the hospital in less than a half hour. I was getting prepped for cath lab and couldn't keep from coughing (just one of those weird things), making catheterization a risky prospect at best. The specialist on staff gave me the option for an injection of a clot busting medication, but the concern was it could break off a piece and, well, kill me. I assented, and my wife approved, so it was done.

Within just a short while, I was able to start communicating again, first by pointing to pictures, then slowly regaining my speech. By the next morning, I was about 90% recovered, and by the end of the weekend just about 100%. My new employer worked with me through the whole ordeal; I missed the first week of training, spent the second week working 1 on 1 with a team coach, and had rejoined my training class by the third week. We finished training in November, had the holiday season to ease into the job, and Jan 1, we started mandatory overtime that lasted until mid-May.

I spent a significant portion of the year eyeball deep in work, as well as cleaning up some of the other issues in my life. DSL Ironworks got sidelined in the process. I've continued working on the Fleet book as I'm able (and have two more nearing completion, knock on wood).

But, things are settling down (at least time-wise) and I've managed to get some drive back to work with the Ironworks stuff. Anyway, if you've asked yourself "I wonder what happened to him?", that's the short version. I've got more stuff planned as well, so I hope you'll stay tuned!
Currently, there will between 14 and 18 ships of various sizes, ranging in size from 10 fighters to 1000 ton mini-jump tenders. The book will include black and white line art (a newish technique I've been working on), short descriptions, deckplans, and full stats for the base ship types. Here are some sample pages, still WIP.
